Autonest began in New York City with a simple problem: too many cars and not enough space.
We were two brothers who loved fixing and building cars, so we put together nearly every dollar we had and bought a few lifts to stack our own cars. We kept the ones we needed and listed the two remaining lifts on Facebook Marketplace. Both sold within two hours, and over the next few weeks, the listings generated hundreds of thousands of views and a flood of inquiries.
That response made us realize we were not the only people struggling with limited space. So we took a chance, invested everything again, and ordered a container of 32 lifts.
We knew how to buy the lifts. What we did not know was that we would also have to pay import duty, arrange drayage from the port, find a loading dock, and somehow unload thousands of pounds of equipment with a giant forklift.
We learned all of that just before the container arrived.
We called several forklift services. The quotes came back at around $4,000, with some telling us it would take two days to unload. We did not have $4,000, two days, a loading dock — or even a warehouse.
So, on the day the container arrived, we walked over to our neighbors and asked whether we could borrow their warehouse. Thankfully, they said yes.
Then we found a local forklift operator named Steve. He showed up and handled the entire container like it was an ordinary Tuesday. We paid him our last $1,200, moved the lifts outside because we still had nowhere to store them, and hoped we had not made a terrible mistake.
That same day, five customers arrived to pick up their lifts. They trusted two brothers selling heavy equipment outside a borrowed warehouse, before we had a showroom, a polished operation, or much of anything besides the products and our word.
Those five customers fueled the beginning of Autonest.
The early days were not glamorous. Our forklifts were prehistoric, held together by paint, rust, and optimism. The brakes were mostly decorative, so stopping required careful planning, a strong leg, and occasionally something solid nearby.
Today, 924 customers later, the way we work has not changed. We do not outsource our work, and we do not outsource our problems. Every installation is handled by our team, under our insurance, with responsibility resting on us.
We install, troubleshoot, and fix what we sell. When we make a mistake, that belongs to us too. We own it, make it right, and keep learning.
We are still two brothers who love cars, helping others build the garages we once needed for ourselves.
Built by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.
